News critique

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/north_east/8505708.stm

The Headline brings the urge to read the article because entertainment gets better with new technology.“Film Institute launches first digital archive in Wales.” Though the launching of the festival is in Wales, as a reader I’m more interested in digital archive. (very effective)

The first line/sentence answered the 5 Ws… this best summarizes the entire story.”In March, Wrexham Library will be the home of the first ever BFI Mediatheque outside England. “

In the second sentence, the writer is trying to sell the story by telling how efficient and useful the service will be to the viewers.

“The system allows people to watch films and TV programmes from the national archive free of charge, and there are currently 1,500 titles available”

I find it difficult to understand why and how the quote was not addressed, in other words who was responsible for the quote in the third line? “Ever expanding digital jukebox". Neither the beginning nor the end of this quote tells who these words belong to.

The rest of the story is unnecessary but important to fill the space.

 2009-10 injury miseries noted

Sterling College athletics point injuries for least championship awards in 2010-09 men’s category.

Warriors had tasted the bitter and the sweet ends of the KCAC titles over a number of years down the line. Men’s teams have been facing tough challenge in terms of group sports that include Football, soccer, truck, Tennis and Basketball.

Men’s Basketball are the latest casualty but, also have junior Zach Goodrich named the first team while freshman Adam Brown was named the All-Freshman Team in their squad swatting up on what it takes to scoop at the conference.

“Obviously there’s a big emphasis on trying to prevent, and in some events try to rehabilitate them.”

Head basketball coach Dean Jadestone said he had a number of injuries that affected the team the most, he expects Matt Bartlett to return to the lineup next season, but said the team doesn’t have a timeline new players had a chance and created an impact.

Warrior’s Head Athletics Trainer Chris Brown is adamant men’s teams have the personnel to reach podium for it is a tradition.

“I have been working with coaches, players and parents on injury statuses and based on injuries, our performances have been terribly affected by the injuries,” he said.

Chris further reiterates that communications among his department with players determines how injuries are treated and how much long they need treatment.

“Our worst injury was Matt Bartlett.  Losing a starter is always tough, we also had a lot of nagging injuries that players could play through, but it took a toll on their performance over the long haul.”

Men’s basketball team has been at the top of the game though with minor disappointments both at home and on away games. Jadestone affirms that losing is part of the game because there’s always room for improvement.

“It’s part of the game. However, and we also saw some players really grow up and step in to gaps that injured players left.”

Major injuries involve tearing of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), junior Mark Swiontek is a point guardrehabilitating this condition.

“It’s been so hard sitting out through two seasons, I’m happy though for the progress” he says.

Swiontek is among the returning players that Coach Dean Jaderstone will be expecting instant impact fromthe seasons down trend. He set to resume practice this fall.

Unlike basketball, baseball and football; Men’s Soccer team has picked a number of injuries during the off season.

Men’s soccer Head coach David Underwood finds it more challenging to deal with injuries during off seasons for it’s the time to determine and tell how who’s strength is vital for specific duty.

“The physical nature of the sport, our players is constantly faced with minor injuries that are more of a nuisance than debilitating. Probably our most significant injury was losing our starting GK, Nic Martinez, for three games due to an eye injury.” Underwood laments.

The 2008-09 seasons saw Men soccer suffer under the mercy of minor injuries that left the team serving at the middle of the conference standing. Underwood marks the minor injuries as bummer to meeting the set goals.

“We had numerous injuries that forced us to play without some of our top players in over half of our games but, nonetheless, we felt the impact of those injuries as we lost 6 of our last 10 games after starting the season with 6 wins against only 1 loss.” He remarks.

National Athletic Trainers Association NATA estimates 1,442,533 injuries occurred among U.S. college student athletes participating in practices or competitions for the nine sports studied.

The overall injury rate in all sports combined was 2.44 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures in 2009. Football had the highest injury rate with 4.36 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures followed by wrestling (2.50), boys' (2.43) and girls' (2.36) soccer, and girls' basketball (2.01).

Boys' basketball, volleyball, baseball, and softball each had injury rates of less than 2.0 injuries per 1,000 athlete exposures.

In each sport, the injury rate was higher in competition than practice settings. Although Men's soccer had slightly higher injury rates than women's soccer, and women’s' basketball had slightly higher injury rates than Men's basketball.

"Sterling College Athletics is taking necessary measures to ensure minimal chances of any sort of injuries eye excellence in the field and court as champions of character.” department's mission.
